August 3, 2012 Day 12, Kamloops to Vancouver, British Columbia

Today we would be traveling from Kamloops to Vancouver, British Columbia.  During a group discussion, we decided that instead of taking the shortest route to Vancouver, we would go out of the way a little bit so we could ride through more of the Canadian Rockies and make a stop in the town of Whistler.  Of course, that is what you do on a motorcycle ride, you take the scenic route, not the shortest.

While in Kamloops, I had a chance to speak with several of the residents regarding the area.  I was surprised that all of the them referred to Kamloops and the surrounding area as a "desert."  Obviously none of these people have ever had the chance to visit Southern California's fabulous High Desert area.  The photos below are of the Kamloops desert area .

Below are some photos of the group getting ready at the hotel before departing Kamloops.

Once we were on the road, it was like the movie Groundhog Day.  Beautiful scenery everywhere.  When the scenery is this good, you do not notice the miles, or kilometers, fly by.

We stopped in the town of Lillooet, which is mainly inhabited by Indians native to the St'at'imc, or Lillooet Nation of Indians, for a gas and rest stop.

Back on the road to Whistler.

We felt much better.

We stopped by the side of the road to rest for a moment when we were approached by this stray dog.  Steve quickly learned that this dog was trained to go fetch rocks.

Whistler Ski Area
We arrived in Whistler and stopped for lunch and to walk around the village.  Whistler Village has an open air Olympic Plaza, which had the Olympics on television.  Several people were in the plaza having a picnic and enjoying the 80 degree temps.

Leaving Whistler

First sight of the Vancouver Skyline.

After lunch, it was back onto the Sea to Sky Highway and to Vancouver.

We arrived in Vancouver in the late afternoon.  After a quick dinner, it was an early evening as we had to be up at 4 a.m. the next morning to catch the Ferry to Vancouver Island.
